Housing Application FAQ

Living on campus can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Our Housing and Residence Life Program offers a variety of programs to meet students’ needs.  We encourage you to participate in the Residence Hall Association and become involved in all of the activities offered by Housing and Residence Life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are new first-time freshmen and transfer students required to live on campus?

No; however, we encourage all students to live on campus and our office will make every effort to house students.

Are freshmen or returning students guaranteed housing?

No. We cannot guarantee space availability for students. Housing is available on a first come, first served basis.

What residence halls are available to freshman?

Freshmen women will be housed in Transitional Hall and Alexander Center. Freshmen males will be housed in Dixon Hall and Stewart Hall.

Is there a certain number of credit hours that students have to have in order to stay in certain residence halls?

In order to stay in Campbell College Suites North & South, students must have at least 30 passed JSU credit hours. Students must have 60 passed JSU credit hours or more to stay in University Pointe.

Is there an application fee / room reservation fee for housing?

Yes. All new students to university housing must pay a one-time $100.00 non-refundable application fee for housing. All returning students to university housing must pay a one-time $75.00 non-refundable room reservation fee for housing.  The office must have the housing fee prior to assigning a housing assignment. Please note that the application fee does not guarantee a housing assignment.

Are all returning students eligible for housing?

Only returning students who are in good conduct standing and students with a previous balance of $200.00 or less are eligible to receive housing.

What if I have a previous balance over $200.00? How can I receive a housing assignment?

You must contact the business office and set up a payment plan prior to receiving a housing assignment.  Once you have set up your payment plan, please bring the documentation to the Housing and Residence Life Department and we will assign you accordingly. Please explain the various fee associated with housing.

Housing staff will place the following charges on all student accounts:

  • University housing room fee
  • Meal Plan
  • PO Box Fee

These fees will appear on the electronic student account statement.

I am on scholarship. Does it cover all of a portion of my housing?

For any scholarship questions, please contact Financial Aid about your scholarship or the Business Office for details regarding your account. Financial aid can be reached by emailing finaid@landaiztc.com or by calling 601-979-2227. Business office can be reached by emailing bursarcares@landaiztc.com or by calling 601-979-2967.

I am student athlete. Must I live in certain residence hall?

No. Athletes can live in any of our residential communities.

When do I receive my room assignment and when do I find out who my roommate is?

Students have the opportunity to select their roommate. If you were administratively assigned, you can log into your PAWS account to view your room and roommate information. These details are also available on your THD Self-Service Portal. Please note that suitemate information is not found for students who reside in Campbell College Suites and University Pointe, Buildings 4-10.

Is there designated housing for honors students?

There is designated housing for new freshmen honors students within Dixon Hall (men) and Transitional Hall (women). Once the designated spaces have been filled, new freshmen honors students will be housed in the appropriate first-year halls.

What is included in each room?

Alexander Center, Dixon, Stewart, and Transitional:
Each room has two twin beds (XL mattress), two desks, two closets, two dressers, two nightstands, and mini blinds.
Campbell College North and Campbell College South Suites:
One twin XL bed, one desk and chair and closet in each room. The common area of each 4 bedroom suite includes a full-size refrigerator, and one table with four chairs. Students are encouraged to bring their own common area furniture. Please note that no University provided furniture can be removed from the room.
University Pointe:
Buildings 1-3 have XL Twin beds, Buildings 4-10 have XL full-size beds, full kitchen with dishwasher, and washer dryer unit.

Do I have to be on the meal plan?

The meal plan is required for all students who reside on campus during the academic school year. Please click here to visit the Dining Services webpage for meal plan options.

If I want to change my meal plan, who do I talk to?

New students cannot change their meal plan option. For further information regarding the University meal plan program, please contact Auxiliary Enterprises at 601-979-1325 or meals@landaiztc.com.

How can I find out information about my P.O. Box?

If you need any information about your P.O. Box, including your P.O. Box number, please contact Postal Services at 601-979-2051. The Post Office is located on the first floor of the J. L. Reddix Building. For further information regarding your student P.O. Box, please contact Postal Services at 601-979-2051 or postal@landaiztc.com.

How do I receive mail?

Each student who resides on campus is required to have a post office box. You may obtain your post office box by visiting Postal Services, located in the J. L. Reddix Building, 1st floor. For further information regarding your student P.O. Box, please contact Postal Services at 601-979-2051 or postal@landaiztc.com.

How do I receive packages?

Packages may be sent via FedEx, UPS, USPS or DHL. When shipping packages or mail, please include the student’s name, the physical address (1400 JR Lynch Street, Jackson, MS 39217) and the JSU P.O. Box. Mail can be picked up in Postal Services, located in the J. L. Reddix Building, 1st floor. For further information regarding your student P.O. Are single rooms available?

Single rooms are guaranteed in the following areas: Campbell College North, Campbell College South, and University Pointe buildings 4-10. If space is available in other residence halls during the semester, we will assign single rooms.

What is the size of the rooms?

All residence hall rooms on our main campus are approximately 10′ x 12′.

May I install carpet in my room?

No; however, area rugs are welcome for decorating and personalizing your room!

May I paint my room?

No. Our Maintenance Department handles all of the painting in the residence halls. If you feel that your room needs painting, inform your Community Director , and he/she will evaluate the room. After evaluating the condition of the room, the Community Director  will make a request to the Maintenance Department for the room to be painted, if needed.

If I know who I want to be room with already, will we be matched up?

Every effort will be made to accommodate roommate preferences when all of the following conditions are met:

A) Both applicants request each other within three days of original application,

B) a double room vacancy exists.

Please note: Roommate preferences take priority over your hall preferences in the assignments process.

If I wish to change my roommate before school starts, can I?

Our office will make every effort to accommodate the request if we can.  If we are unable to grant your request, we ask for students to wait until Room Consolidation to switch roommates. You can email your request to housinginfo@landaiztc.com. Include your name, J# and the roommate’s name and J# in your email request.

If I wish to change residential communities before school starts, can I?

Students must wait until room consolidation to change halls. Room consolidation dates are announced in September.

Why do I have to consolidate if my roommate moves out?

All residents are charged at a double room rate with the exception of Campbell College Suites and University Pointe. If you do not wish to be charged a single rate, you must move to another room (consolidate) or another resident may move into the room with you. We charge students according to the way they live. If there are two people residing in a room, we charge a double room rate. If there is only one person in a room, we charge a single room rate.

How do I change rooms?

Each year a time period is set aside to exchange rooms usually one to two weeks after the residence hall opens for the academic year. See your Community Director for details.

Can I bring my own mini-fridge and microwave?

Yes. Students are allowed to bring refrigerators (must not exceed 4.2 cubic feet) and microwaves (must not exceed 1,000 watts). Please click here to see the complete list of what to bring when you move into your assigned space. 

Are there any appliances that are not allowed to be brought on-campus?

Yes. Please read the student handbook for prohibited items. Electrical appliances including but not limited to personally-owned air conditioners, washers and dryers, dishwashers, microwave ovens, extra refrigerators/freezers, exterior aerials, antennae, Wi-Fi routers or satellite dishes; open-coiled appliances such as toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, electric grills with exposed coils, etc., or space heaters; halogen incense.

Are ADA options available?

Yes. If you are interested in seeking ADA accommodations, please reach out to our Dr. Richardson or Samantha Manning in our ADA Department by emailing adaservices@landaiztc.com.

May I bring a pet?

No, we do not allow pets on-campus; however, if you need a service animal you must complete the appropriate application and meet the requirements. Please contact ADA Services for an application and for all the details by emailing adaservices@landaiztc.com.

If I have a maintenance issue in my room, how do I report it?

To report any maintenance issues, please CLICK HERE or scan the QR code located at the front desk of your residence hall, and complete the form in entirety. If your maintenance request is an urgent request, please speak with your Community Director after submitting the request to ensure that he/she is aware of the problem immediately.

What do I do if I have problems in my room or if I need assistance?

If you need assistance during regular business hours, you may contact the hall staff by speaking to the Community Assistant (CA) or contacting the Community Director of your hall or complex. Community Director’s office. The Housing and Residence Life Department is also open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Contact information for hall staff can be found here.  For emergencies, please contact Public Safety at (601) 979-2580.

If you need assistance outside of regular business hours, JSU has overnight receptionists located in Alexander East and Alexander West. Each residence hall has Community Assistants (CAs) who are on-call during overnight hours. His/her contact information is at the front desk, and you may reach out to him/her if you need assistance. If you are ill and/or you are experiencing an emergency, please contact public safety @ 601-979-2580. 

 

The on-call CA can contact the on-call director for any other urgent matter. 

What do I do if I lose my keys?

Report lost keys to your Community Director immediately. You will sign the appropriate charge form and the key will be ordered promptly. Once the key has been replaced, it will be delivered to your Community Director, who will notify you that your key has arrived.

May I make a copy of my key?

No. For security purposes, you are not allowed to make a duplicated copy of your key. If you do so, the locks will be changed and you will be responsible for replacing both keys assigned to your room. 

Is there Internet service available in the rooms?

Yes, Internet service is available in all residence hall rooms. Student computers should meet minimum recommended specifications. Please note students are responsible for purchase and installations of software on their computers. JSU Support Service Personnel will not work on a student’s computer. Computers must be free of illegal downloads, such as music, movies, etc.

 

Do you have cable?

You can access the University provided cable options via Xfinity Stream. CLICK HERE for more info!

Is smoking allowed in the residence halls?

No. Jackson State University is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is NOT allowed in the residence halls or on campus. Housing is a privilege. If you smoke in your residence halls, you will be charged a fee and will potentially lose your opportunity to continue residing on campus. 

Do residence halls have a private bath?

Some residence halls do have private bathrooms, while others have community bathrooms. The cleaning staff is responsible for cleaning the community bathrooms only. However, we do ask the residents to do their part by cleaning up after themselves. Students are responsible for cleaning their private bathrooms. If your community bathroom has any issues, please complete a maintenance log and notify your Community Director.

Should I insure my property?

Yes, we strongly encourage each student to insure his or her property. Please CLICK HERE for more information regarding student property insurance.
